1. The difference between Library subscription databases, such as Academic Universe and LexisNexis, and the World Wide Web is that the library databases provide full publishing information about the articles they index. The World Wide Web on the other hand is free and available to everyone. They can be created by anyone.

2. A bibliography is the alphabetically arranged list of evaluated sources that are related to your issue. An annotated bibliography is a bibliography that includes a summary about that information that helps you visualize your sources.

3. Some characteristics of a crediable source are that the source is apart of a popular organization, that the source is listed under a reputable domain, is that the source published in a print or online journal that is peer-reviewed, and is it the online source duplicated in print.

4. I would create a research plan to guide my research so i can keep all my information organized. Since we will need to use many different outside sources, organization will be key to keep my paper on the right track.

5. Plagiarism is when a writer deliberatly copies someone elses work. You can avoid plagiarism by always writing in your own words, never copying someone elses work.

When i was making my own PostSecret Card i wanted to make a card that had some personal value to me. So i made mine around an issue that i believed in. I wanted to talk about dreams and standing up for what you believe in. For my PostSecret card i took the picture of Jessie Owen's on the podieum saluting to the world. I thought this was very important and would hold alot of value since that is such a memoriable moment in history. From my post Secret card i wanted my audience to understand it like i did. I wanted them to see how important it is to never back down from your beliefs. I used Jessie Owens as an example so people would better understand the importance of this. I was very satisfied with my end result, because i feel i was successful with my goal. I feel it is very obvious what the message is.

In the first, 1984 Macintosh advertisement their claim/argument is that the new Mac computer’s coming out are so amazing that it’s going to change the world and that its new computers are far more advanced than any other computers. I think we need to remember this is 1984 and I doubt nobody has computers, so I feel the audience for this commercial are business owners who might need computers for their companies. The special effects and unclean image make it’s clear that this is a very old commercial.
In the anti-Mac advertisement it has a man trying to portray the average owner of a computer. Someone who doesn’t have too much knowledge of how a computer works. The claim/argument of this commercial is for all people to see all the little flaws that the Mac has and how difficult it really is to work, compared to a different computer. The audience for this commercial is the average owner of a computer. I think this technique of advertisement is very useful, because it gives the buyer an opportunity to see all the real disadvantages of a Mac, without having to experience it themselves. I don’t feel this would be a fair assumption for someone buying a computer to make a decision on.

Post Secret Card

I really liked the post secret card which said, "Even Vegetarians think of meat sometimes." I think this is a good Post Secret Card. Even though people might think it is intended for Vegetarians, i think the audience is for everyone. I think its a deeper message. I think whomever wrote this is talking about temptations. That throughout life, nomatter what you belief, you will be tempted to break those morals. At the end of the day, its whether you can withstand that temptation and live your life. I think the picture of the girl and her eyes is very important, because it looks like a normal women but she has our tongue licking across her teeth. This shows the temptation taking over her.

Online Advertisement

For my online advertisement i picked a walmalt advertisement on http://aol.com/ I thought this advertisement was important because of its location and what it said. It was right below where you put your email address and password, so its impossible to miss it. I like this advertisement because everyone is the audience. It's a bright pink Valentine's Day advertisement with candy all over the ad. The slogan is "Save Money. Live Better." I think this is very important because of our economy. Everyone is watching what they are spending these days. Hundreds of couples are going to be buying Valentine's Day gifts during this week and something simple and cheap, like Walmart is doing, is perfect for people to go out and buy. I think this is a great advertisement and a very successful one.

There are alot of differences between visual arguments and written arguments. Visual arguments are more immediate and can draw you into the argument. You don't need to read everything first, once you see the picture you immediatly understand the circumstance. Another quality about visual arguments that is very important is the ability to see emotions. When you read an argument you cant see how people feel, but when you can see a picture and see peoples' expressions, you can understand their feelings better. On the other hand, written arguments give the reader the freedom to interpret and imagine the argument on their own terms, which might help people understand better.

Essay Author and Title:

Brad Stone "If you Run a Red Light, Will Everyone Know?

Central Argument of the Essay:(p.348)

The central argument of the essay is the privacy a person may be aloud to have and if Criminalsearches.com is a good website to have.

My Central Claim about the nature/effectiveness of the argument in the essay:

I feel that privacy is a very important topic and this website has alot of potential for debate. I feel that author is more one sided then the other and not fair for the reader to hear both sides of the story.

This is how the author mnipulated the rhetorical appeals:

The logos appeal:

The logos appeal of the argument is the understanding and common sense that the world is changing and that people are going to be able to retrieve information about other people.

The ethos appeal:

The ethos appeal of the argument is the use of quotes from multiple people to help prove his point.

The pathos appeal:

The pathos appeal of the argument is the author using the feeling of safety since you can use the website to find out where danger might be.

My conclusion about the nature/effectiveness of the argument in the essay:

After reading the argument, i feel that Brad Stone has alot of valuable information to help prove his point, especially quotes from people who are effected by the website. I think that is a strong style of persuasion.

In Class Writing Assignment

"If you run a red light, Will everyone know?" has an interesting introductory sentence to it. It says, "Want to vet a baby sitter?...Curious about the past of a potential date?" As you read this, its hard not to conclude that Brad Stone wants the reader to agree with him and feel that the Criminalsearches.com is a very good website to have around. I don't feel like Brad talks about both sides of the situation farely and is very leniant towards the privacy of the public.

Response for Rhetorical Analysis

One essay that i read which i really liked was ,"If you run a red light, will everyone know?" by Brad Stone. This essay talks about a website called www.CriminalSearches.com . This website lets your search by name through criminal records of all 50 states and over 3,500 counties. I think this will be a good essay for my Rhetorical Anaylsis, because i think this is a very important topic and i feel that people deserve the right for their previous acts to be hidden from public. I think its unfair that anybody can go online and see your criminal history. If you don't already know the person enough to have to search their history, then you shouldn't be trusting them in the first place. I feel many people have made mistakes and incidences in the past that they have regreted or mistakenly done and having that information open for others to see is a big invasion of privacy.

Short Writing Assignment 3

One argument that I hear about all the time is the driving age. I live in Maryland and over the past couple years the driving age has slowly been rising up. Some people believe that the driving age is too young and kids are begining to drive on the road before they are mature enough. On the other hand, alot of families depend on the driving age being young with kids these days helping parents carpool and drive to places. For example, if i hadn't gotten my license before junior year, it would have been hard for me to find a way to drive into school everymorning, since i went to school in Washington, D.C. and would be too far to be dropped off.
http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=4433138n

This video talks about teen deaths and the driving ages in multiple states. Every 90 minutes a teenager dies in a car accident with over 5,000 a year. It says when New Jersey moved the driving age to 17, deaths dropped 30 percent. This video is saying that their is less deaths when the driving age is higher or has risen from the past.

This topic is an arguement for many reasons. Particularly since their is no correct answer to this and everyone has their own opinions and remarks. I wanted to talk about it because i feel i have alot to relate to it, since we all have experienced learning to drive and the debate over the rules.

Short Writing Assignment 4

Much debate has gone on about our generation and our inability to read as much as our parents. Why? Much has to do with the technological advances we have made over the years and the popularity of the internet and the adaptations we are making incorporating it into our lifestyles. In Carr's, "Is Google Making Us Stupider?" the debate is whether or not the use of the internet, esp "Google" is preventing us from reading as much as we should. It also talks about how we are all reading off the internet instead of books which has a different aspect, because the internet users are only reading things of their interests. Short articles and stories are being read on the internet instead of kids reading full length books. Some people belief this is bad for our generation, but in reality if they are still reading, Why does it matter?

Short Writing Assignment 2

Miller’s essay on persuasion is very interesting. I think it’s a matter that nobody has really thought about. I think its interesting how Miller believes that nobody can believe something they already don’t believe. Miller talks about previous incidents involving politics with Clinton and George Bush. If Miller is correct and nobody can be persuaded something new then the politic world is headed for danger. How can anything be decided in debates. I think Miller is wrong. I think people can easily and still are being persuaded everyday. We see knew laws being passed and laws changing, which shows that people’s ideas can change over time and be persuaded to believe something new.
