Passage A
1Did you know that until May 5 of every year, you are not really working for yourself?
2A group in Washington, D.C., has learned that it takes workers an average of four months and four days to earn enough to pay their taxes.
3The group found in its study that taxes eat up 34 percent of all the income in the United States.
4So, if workers used their entire income for taxes, they would not be through paying them until May.
5Because/Since May 5 is the first day people really work for themselves, the study group has some advice.
6It would like a bill passed naming May 5 “Tax Freedom Day.”
7On that day, you would give yourself a break, regardless of how hard you worked.
8Therefore, from May 5 on you would finally be your own boss.
Passage B
1Did you ever daydream about writing your life story?
2Do you think that your life is too dull, or you can’t write?
3Anyone’s life story is filled with fascinating events, and writing them down in the best way you know can give you a sense of accomplishment and, perhaps, leave a valuable inheritance to your family.
4The first thing to do is buy a loose-leaf notebook.
5Each page of the book should be titled with a significant milestone of your life—from your first dog to your proudest moment.
6You should then jot down a few key words in the book whenever a memory comes back to you. 7The idea is not to begin with “I was born . . .” and try to write a chronological history of your whole life.
8Just dive into your passed at random; one memory will trigger another.
9It will become quite easier after a while.
10It's also important to write in your own language.
11Plain, honest writing is the goal.

Our notion that only poets and novelists have to write is unrealistic and many of us foolishly object to taking courses in writing. Therefore, college students going into business think their secretaries will do their writing for them, but most students don't realize young business people seldom have private secretaries. In fact, Students going into the technical or scientific fields may think that writing is something they seldom have to do, but in todays society, practicing engineers and scientists say they spend half of their time writing memos and reports. This attitude shows a naive faith in the competency of their secretaries. Other things being equal, a person in any field who can express ideas clearly is sure to succeed.

Topic Proposal for Policy Paper
·I am taking a global approach for a proposal to keep the driving age at 16 throughout the country.
·The problem is the debate on whether the driving age should be raised to 18 or not. From the constant issue of teenage accidents throughout the nation, parents are trying to get the government to not allow teenagers to get their license until they turn 18. The problem is families, especially large ones, depend on their children to drive when they are 16. It is essential to help kids get to and from school and to help run errands.
· The solution, we need a nation program for better training for kids. To help kids learn at a younger age to become better drivers when they get their license. One issue is the value of trust. Parents don’t trust their kids to drive at such a young age. It is their responsibility to teach their children about maturity and making smart decisions when they drive to help prevent accidents.
·The justification for this solution will help bring more freedom to teenagers. It will help families function better. I know tons of kids from my high school who wouldn’t have been able to go to my high school or do after school activities if they did not have their license. High School is some of the greatest times of a person’s life. A time to learn and mature before college. If kids don’t have that freedom then we would be sending them off into college and the real world without any experience of being on their own and making their own decisions.
· I am basing this proposal on the perspective that kids need to get their license when they turn 16 to learn how to have freedom in a controlled environment. Getting your license for any teenager is a big event. Its like your sweet 16 or first kid. It’s something you look forward to, a big step in your life. Taking that away is taking away some of our greatest experiences in life. If parents don’t want kids getting their license until they are 18 to keep us out of trouble, well shouldn’t we just be locked into our homes then? Where is the border to stop us? I don’t think it should be taken out on the kids, it’s the parents fault for not teaching them to have discipline and act like an adult.
o “Don’t Raise Driving Age.” The Herald Online. 14 Sept. 2008. 17 Mar. 2009. http://www.heraldonline.com/opinions/story/815230.html
·My only concern about this paper is having the ability to persuade my readers to agree with my argument. Everyone has their own experiences and opinions, what my proposal relies on his the good for the country.

I believe an article holds credibility when it uses examples and solutions for its arguments. I feel they need to have reliable sources to prove there points. Any major publishing company or newspaper holds alot of credibility to me. Also a very important factor to me for credibility is the date of the article. Some people might not pay attention to this, but we have to realize our culture is constantly changing and an article from two years ago may hold no value to us anymore. Almost all the articles in this section of The Carolina Reader hold alot of credibility to me because they were published in "The State". One article, "Homeless People Used to Scare Me," was published at AssociatedContent.com. A website doesn't hold much credibility, because anybody can say anything on the internet. Also the article, "Oliver Mission Plans to Move," was published November 18, 1999. That was almost ten years ago. Alot has changed in the past ten years and information in the article may not be relevant anymore.

Out of the three articles the one that was most rhetorically effective was the "One-Stop Proposal for Area's Homeless Looks Promising" article. I think this article was most effective in presenting its message and argument because out of the three articles i feel this one has the best plan. This plan will work because it requires all the agencies that provide shelter, food, rehabilitation and health care to the homeless to move to Shop Road. If they all moved there together then they will be able to work together to help the homeless. Our dilemma of not having enough workers and helpers won't be a problem anymore because all the agencies will be close to each other working together. I also thought this article was effective, because it wasn't like the other two articles which started out with negative facts and reminders of their failures. By reading this it just gives me no hope in their cause, but for this argument and its enthusiasm and determination, it makes me want to help.
