Andrew Dys article is very important, because he talks about multiple tragedies that have occurred to high school students over the past few years that I can use as good examples for my paper. It is obvious that Andrew’s point of view is to raise the driving age from this article. You only talks about the negative effects of the driving age being so low today. I think having someone with this point of view will help give my paper more variety.
"S.C. Code of Laws Title 56 Chapter 5 Uniform Act Regulating Traffic On Highways - www.scstatehouse.gov-LPITS." South Carolina Legislature Online. 25 Feb. 2009
This website is very valuable to me. It lists all the motor vehicle laws of South Carolina. This is very useful since I will be able to use this information to fully understand the driving laws of South Carolina and do research on how eventually will feel about the topic. This laws will be important for me to state in my paper so the audience fully understands the circumstances.
U. South Carolina: Column: Raising driving age lacks logic." The America's Intelligence Wire (Sept 16, 2008): NA. General OneFile. Gale. University of South Carolina Libraries. 2 Mar. 2009
This article talks about the pros and cons of raising the driving age. It is very useful because the author fairly analyzes both sides of the argument. They think that there is momentum that the driving age will be older very soon. I think this is important for my paper because this is valuable information on why they think it will change soon.
Vettraino, J. "Driver Training in First Grade?" AutoWeek 57 (2007): 21-25.
This article talks about a program that starts teaching kids about driving in 1st grade. It makes perfect sense that starting to practice at a younger age will lead too better drivers in the future and lead to less accidents. Cruisers curriculum at Clemson University in South Carolina has become a model for this. This information will help me because it is an alternative to raising the driving age.
Henry, Ed. "Risky Business." Kiplinger's Personal Finance 56 (2002): 136.
Henry’s article talks about a BMW driving school in Spartanburg, South Carolina. This driving school takes young teenagers and tests them through obstacle courses consisting of unexpected obstacles and ice-roads. The technique is to give teenagers an opportunity to understand the dangers of the road and to become more experienced in a controlled environment. This is also another really good source, because it gives another alternative to help the on going debate of young drivers.
Edwards, Jerri D. "Acceptability and validity of older driver screening with the DrivingHealth." Accident Analysis and Prevention 40 (2008): 1157-163.
This article talks about older drivers and the risk they present on the roads. Its about the use of using technology to decide when someone might not be able to drive anymore. On this technological screening, younger drivers performed significantly better then the older drivers on tests about physical and mental tests of the road. This will be useful for my paper since I will be talking about how the driving age might be to young, I can use this as another aspect for my paper.
Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. "Teen Drivers Often Ignore Bans On Using Cellphones And Texting." ScienceDaily 16 June 2008. 2 March 2009
This article talks about cellphone laws and how teenage drivers are ignoring them while driving. In our high-tech world today, the use of technology has become an essential part our lifestyle. Teenagers spend hours using cell phones, ipods, blackberry’s, and other small gadgets every day. This information may be the reason for some young teenage accidents and is very valuable information to use for my paper.
Thomas, Ken. “Study: Teen Drivers Ignore Cell phone Laws.” USA Today 9 July. 2008. 2 March 2009
This article talks more about cell phone laws and gives examples of some teenagers and how they feel about it. It also talks about other states and their laws which can be useful to compare South Carolina’s driving laws with other states and the effects on the teenagers.
